"CR" of CR-X is derived from the initials of the English words "Car Renaissance or City Runabout or CRuising". There are multiple theories about this origin. "X" means a unknown performance. The name of the car for export is ”CRX", there is no hyphen. In Japan, "CRX" was already registered as a trademark, so became "CR-X".
