SKYLINE is derived from the English word "skyline", which means ”an outline of mountains defined against the sky”. There are two theories about the naming process. The 1st theory is that SKYLINE was named by the developer Shinichiro Sakurai. This name was named after the blue sky and white mountains of the Northern Alps that he saw while skiing in Shiga Kogen, Japan. The 2nd theory is that SKYLINE was named by the executive management of Fuji Precision Industry, which is the predecessor of Nissan. First, "Sky" was extracted from the golf ball product names "Blue Sky" and "Skyway" manufactured by Fuji Precision Industry. Finally, SKYLINE was selected from the in-house proposals.
When the name SKYLINE won the Good Naming Award in December 2020, Nissan's announcement supported the 2nd theory above.
"GT" of GT-R stands for the English words "Grand Touring". "R" is derived from the initials of R380 and the English word "Race".
