The company and brand name ALPINE is derived from the Alps, which crosses central Europe from east to west. ALPINE was founded in 1955 by Jean Rédélé. While running a Renault dealer, he was a racing driver and won numerous races. He won the Alpine Rally "coupe des alpes", which is the origin of the company name and brand name.
In 1955, the first company name was "Société des Automobiles Alpine". When the shares were transferred from the Rédélé family to Renault in 1973, it was renamed "Société des Automobiles Alpine Renault".
