The company and brand name BMW is derived from the initials of the Bayerische Motoren Werke in German or Bavarian Motor Works in English. BMW emerged from a renaming of the aircraft engine manufacturer Rapp Motorenwerke in 1917, located in Munich, the capital of the State of Bavaria.
The exact origin of the company and brand name ALPINA has not yet been clarified. In the Scottish region, Alpina is known as the women's name. In German, Alpina means "of the Alps."
