How that the name of Jeep is derived to be remains a mystery, though there are four different theories that have been posed over the years.

The most popular theory: The brand name Jeep is derived from a slurring of GP meaning either "General Purpose" or "Government Purpose". Joe Frazer, Willys-Overland President from 1939 to 1944, claimed to have coined the word jeep by slurring the initials G and P.

The 2nd theory: Jeep is derived from a pronounce of the Ford GPW, abbreviation actually means G for "Government use", P to designate its 80-inch wheelbase and W to indicate its Willys-Overland designed engine.

The 3rd theory: According to the testimony of R. Lee Ermey, television and voice actor, and Marine drill instructor, Jeep is derived from a comic book character "Eugene the Jeep". This character is Popeye's "jungle pet" and was "small, able to move between dimensions and could solve seemingly impossible problems".

The 4th theory: Jeep stands for "Just Enough Essential Parts". This acronym reflects the bare-bones reliability of Jeeps.
